The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn

Is a cat a man, Huck?”
“No.”
“Well, den, dey ain’t no sense in a cat talkin’ like a man.  Is a cow a man, er is a cow a cat?”
“No, she ain’t either of them.”
“Well, den, she ain’t got no business to talk like either one er de yuther of ‘em.  Is a Frenchman a man?”

...And so goes the argument between Huckleberry Finn and the escaped slave, Jim, in the chapter entitled "Was King Solomon Wise?"  This 9 minute retelling of the chapter is complete with sound effects, two different voices (Huck and Jim), and some music to highlight the beginning and end.

I originally edited and retold this chapter for an English class in 2001 or 2002 after deciding that it was one of the best and funniest chapters to make into an audio presentation.  There was only one thing I threw in there that wasn't in the original story. At the start of the chapter, Huck was describing the contents of a trunk they claimed.  Jim is digging through the trunk when suddenly a horn is honked.  Jim says, "Now I wonder wat dat's doin' in dere?"

Both the voices of Huck and Jim were mine.  I made Huck's voice by speaking with something in between a southern and western accent.  Jim's voice was kind of a drawl spoken really fast, which I slowed down to lower the pitch.  It was a very satisfying effect, though there were a few words that got slurred so badly that they sound a little like something else.

For the most part, this project was a straightforward one, which has little background or behind-the-scenes information.  That being the case, I hope you enjoy the retelling of "Was Solomon Wise?".
